Marcus Rashford has been given harsh advice from Manchester United legendary striker Dwight Yorke following a poor second season under Erik ten Hag.

Marcus Rashford‘s first season under Erik ten Hag was a huge success. The Manchester United winger became the first player this decade to score 30 goals in a season across all competitions, propelling them to third in the Premier League and winning the Carabao Cup final.

However, across 2023/24, the 26-year-old hit a considerable dip, failing to score more than eight goals across all competitions and generally performing poorly compared to his usual standards.

While he is still Ten Hag’s first-choice left winger, Rashford has drawn criticism due to a perceived lack of input compared to hard-working teammates such as Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking recently, legendary United striker Dwight Yorke had his say on Rashford, explaining that although Rashford has been through hard times of late, both on and off the field, he has to want to put in the effort to regain his form.

“You have to find out where the individual is at, what is going through his head, what is his thought process in his everyday life,” Yorke said on talkSPORT. “At the end of the day, we all have issues. We all have tough times in our lives.

“I am sure that being left out of the England set-up last year, you expect him to come back with a little bit of fire in his belly and kick on after a poor season by his standards. Marcus Rashford is the only person who can get himself out of that slump.

“You can bring in the best coaches around him, but he has to have that burning desire to get himself back. We know he has all the talent and all the ability.

“But if he is not prepared to put that effort in and really bring himself back from his poorest season last year, he is not going to get back to that level. He has to want to do it.

“I have defended Marcus many times, but he just seems unhappy. For whatever reason, I don’t know, but he just does not seem to be enjoying his football like he used to.”

Although Yorke’s advice may be a little harsh, it rings true. Rashford has had a big show of faith from Ten Hag to keep him in the squad despite his poor form last season, and he has to put the work in to repay the Dutchman if he wants to hit the previous heights we have all seen him do at Old Trafford.
