“Many good players…” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer breaks silence on Besiktas transfer strategy amid links to ex-Manchester United midfielder
Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has addressed potential transfers for his new club Besiktas this month.
Solskjær, 51, became the new manager of Turkish side Besiktas last week as he returns to the hot-seat for the first time since his Manchester United departure in 2021.
Besiktas currently sit sixth in the Super Lig and have not won the league since 2020/21, with two sixth-place finishes since then.
With the Norwegian boss joining the club during the January transfer window, it is likely that he will want some signings to bring into his squad.
Recent reports have claimed that the ex-United boss would like to sign Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence, who previously worked under Solskjaer in the Academy at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer addresses Besiktas transfer plans
Speaking to the media in his signing ceremony, Solskjaer was asked about the transfer strategy of his new club.
He detailed the importance of the club working together in this aspect but gave little away in terms of who he may be looking to sign.
“Yeah, I think what we are talking about here now, it’s not just me making decisions or the president making decisions,” Solskjaer explained.
“Because it’s with the scouting people as well, so we together make have to make decisions and that stability is important.
“But yeah, there are many good players out there, but they’re also many good players in in this squad at the moment.”
Solskjaer could force United reunion in Europa League
When he decided to take the job at Besiktas, Solskjaer would have certainly had one eye on the Europa League campaign.
The Turkish club are currently sitting 28th in the new-look table, and it is only 24 clubs who progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
However, with two games remaining and only a single point separating them from potential qualification, there will undoubtably be a target to progress for Solskjaer.
It would not only be good momentum for his club but also give him a chance at playing against United, who are also in the competition.
Should Ruben Amorim’s side finish outside of the top eight–they arecurrently seventh–a potential clash against Solskjaer’s new team would be a possibility in the play-off rounds.
