Manchester United hosted an open training session ahead of their Europa League clash against Lyon and Matthijs de Ligt was not involved.
Manchester United might have walked away with six points from their last two games had they been more clinical in front of goal – instead, they were left with just a single point.
Ruben Amorim’s men don’t have time to dwell on missed chances, though, with a vital Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon fast approaching.
With little to play for in the Premier League, winning the Europa League now represents United’s most realistic path back into European competition next season.
After finishing third in their group, the Reds advanced by defeating Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Notably, they remain the only unbeaten side in the tournament.
Up next is a tougher test against French side Lyon, but Amorim’s squad will back themselves to book a spot in the semi-finals.
De Ligt not involved in pre-Lyon training session
Before travelling to France for the first-leg of the tie this week, United hosted an open training session on Wednesday afternoon.
It was quickly noticed that Kobbie Mainoo was back in action at Carrington and he could return to the squad to face Lyon.
Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven remained out of action while Toby Collyer was also absent from the session due to a knock. It looks unlikely that any of those three will be available for the game.
Some youth talent were involved in the session including Harry Amass, Jack Moorhouse and Jayden Kamason. Chido Obi was not spotted and is not available for selection in Europe anyway.
Luke Shaw and Mason Mount were both in the session and are building their fitness levels after recently returning from injury.
