Manchester United’s new manager talks take a turn after Thomas Tuchel’s England extension

The uncertainty around who will be in charge of Man United next season rolls on as Thomas Tuchel agrees to extend his England contract until 2028.

Since the sacking of Ruben Amorim at the beginning of January, the feeling around Manchester United has been pretty much nothing but positive.

With Michael Carrick taking over and having a record of four wins in a row and one draw, the fans and the players are now incredibly confident of their chances to get back into the Champions League, as they currently sit in fourth place in the league.

However, despite Carrick being able to bring back smiles to the faces of the fans and the players, there seems to be a reluctance from the board to trust him long-term and grant him the permanent managerial role in the summer.

Out of fear of making the same mistakes they made when appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer permanently, the club has looked at many other, more experienced alternatives to the Man United Legend, whose only permanent role so far has been in the Championship with Middlesbrough.

Thomas Tuchel off the cards for United?

As confirmed on Thursday, England manager Thomas Tuchel agreed to a two-year extension of his contract, allowing him to be in charge for the upcoming World Cup and European Championships.

In response to his new contract, Tuchel said, “It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity, and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”

With the German enjoying life as England manager, it looks like his getting the Man United job is now a definite no, meaning the Red Devils will have to turn to one of their other candidates.

Furthermore, according to Ben Jacobs talking to The United Stand, United as of now, “haven’t contacted anyone about the permanent job in the summer, as internal discussions are still ongoing.

“Partly to understand whether Michael Carrick will be in this process, or to run the process while Carrick tries to qualify for Champions League football. As we get into, potentially late February, the club hope to turn those internal discussions into external.”

Who else do Man United go for?

Throughout the discussion of who would be the best fit to manage United, the two frontrunners have remained Thomas Tuchel and Luis Enrique. With Tuchel almost completely out of the equation, Enrique could be the most likely candidate.

With two Champions League titles and multiple League titles across multiple countries under his belt, Enrique has heaps of experience that the masses around Manchester United care about most for their new manager.

Current Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for Manchester United due to his impeccable CV and experience in England. However, given his age, the Italian may want to step back from managing after this World Cup.

United may opt for a younger, hungrier manager, such as Julian Nagelsmann or the potential Pep Guardiola replacement, Enzo Maresca.

It is still unclear what will transpire with this situation, and the club will likely give Michael Carrick the benefit of the doubt for the rest of the season, allowing him to prove his worth. However, one thing is almost certain: Thomas Tuchel will not be the new man at Old Trafford next season.
