Manchester United’s most important transfer move is so clear after Ruben Amorim’s 10-word plea

Manchester United are looking to make moves during the January transfer window to improve Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Ruben Amorim has had a difficult time at Manchester United so far, with just four wins in his opening 12 games as head coach.

It is already clear that the Portuguese boss will need several signings in key positions – such as wingback – in order for the team to excel in his system.

However, United have wasted considerable amounts of cash in recent years on failed transfers, which now leaves the club in a difficult financial position.

The Reds are currently not close to breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, but INEOS will not want to continue the same trend otherwise it could be a different story soon.

That has led to reports claiming that almost every player has their price tag at United, including some of the fan favourites.

Mainoo is attracting interest amid United contract stall

Kobbie Mainoo’s future has caused a significant stir in the United fanbase this week after reports emerged that Chelsea are eyeing the teenager.

The Reds are yet to agree a contract extension with the Academy graduate, whose current deal runs until June 2027, and talks are said to have stalled.

Depending on the offer, it has been claimed that United would consider selling the extraordinary 19-year-old due to the financial aid it would provide, especially since his sale would be considered as ‘pure profit’.

Many fans would argue that new, shiny signings would mean very little if you got rid of the most exciting Academy graduate we’ve seen in a decade. With United being a club forever linked with youth development, it seems ludicrous.

Amorim’s plea shows United must prioritise Mainoo contract

When discussing the teenager in his latest press conference, Amorim made it clear that he wants to keep players like Mainoo at the club.

“I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones,” he proclaimed.

The hierarchy at Old Trafford might be searching for ways to sign new talent, but it is quite clear that one of their biggest priorities must be tying down Mainoo to a new deal.

While a lot of the current transfer gossip is simply noise, that may become stronger if a contract agreement cannot be found soon.

Not only for footballing reasons, for which there are many, but Mainoo being a key part of the project going forward is important for Manchester United. Football clubs have identities and it would be extremely worrying if INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe moved too far away from that.
