Manchester United are reportedly still interested in signing a new midfielder this summer as Rúben Amorim continues his Old Trafford rebuild.
Manchester United are currently aiming to secure a new striker this summer, with Rúben Amorim still keen on bringing in fresh attacking talent.
Having signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for the wide forward positions, United are making inroads to sign 22-year-old Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig.
However, with Newcastle also keen on the Slovenian international, Amorim’s side are keeping tabs on signing a possible midfielder, as the head coach is eager to add reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Although who United sign in midfield is heavily dependent on their sales, this has not stopped the club scouring the market for possible options.
United willing to go big on Barcelona’s López
Amorim has been clear that he wants to sign a new midfielder who is dynamic and can provide a lot of energy in midfield. According to Spanish outlet Sport, via Sport Witness, one such name they like is Barcelona’s Fermín López.
The 22-year-old has become a firm member of Hansi Flick’s current squad, rising from their Academy with “spectacular” performances, and caught the eye of United’s scouting team, with Sport claiming the club were willing to pay £26 million to sign him last summer – although Barcelona said no.
However, after López continued to shine in La Liga, Sport suggest United have now upped the amount they are open to committing to the Spaniard to £61 million.
López, who is also of interest to Chelsea, is possibly on the market this summer amid a change in the club’s sporting situation.
Although the midfielder does not actively want to leave, he would do so if Barcelona were to put him on the market.
United’s midfield issues can be fixed with training
There is no doubt that United need a new midfielder in the coming months, with major question marks still surrounding who the ideal pair to start in the middle of Amorim’s 3-4-3 system is.
However, across pre-season so far, it has seemed as if United have become more compact and been able to better deal with midfield battles during the fixtures against Leeds, West Ham, and Bournemouth.
Amorim has consistently emphasised that the club’s midfield would improve once the players became more athletic and fitter, and so far in the United States, they’ve shown this to be the case.
Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Manuel Ugarte have all shown flashes of improvement. However, there remain question marks over Casemiro, who tends to start slowly before improving his form as the season progresses.
While the club should still look to recruit a new midfielder this summer, there is hope that the general performance standard of those already in contention for the spots will improve during 2025/26.
