Manchester United ‘waiting for signal’ from Serie A giants to launch talks for “useless” star’s replacement

No position is safe at Manchester United this summer, with Rúben Amorim looking to completely rebuild his squad in the wake of a disastrous Premier League season.

Manchester United are looking more and more likely to strengthen their goalkeeping department during the upcoming summer transfer window.

First-choice goalkeeper André Onana has come under significant scrutiny this season for his performances, though manager Rúben Amorim has continued to publicly support the Cameroonian throughout the campaign.

Even if Amorim retains his trust in Onana going into next season, a replacement may still be required for Altay Bayındır, who is likely to leave in search of regular first-team football.

Meanwhile, third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton is in talks to extend his contract at Old Trafford. However, with negotiations still ongoing and his current deal set to expire at the end of next month, his future remains uncertain.

Maignan among main goalkeeper targets

Having previously been linked with the likes of Diogo Costa, Bart Verbruggen and Zion Suzuki, Mike Maignan has recently emerged as another player that United would look to sign to replace their struggling keeper.

According to the Italian outlet CalcioMercato, Manchester United and Chelsea are awaiting signals from Milan to determine whether negotiations can proceed.

The 29-year-old, whose contract expires next year, declined to sign an extension in January due to salary demands, meaning if the goalkeeper wishes to leave, Milan would have to reduce their previously requested fee of around £68.5 million to cash in.

A fee of around £35 million would reportedly be sufficient to sign one of the world’s best goalkeepers, which would be fantastic value given United’s financial situation this summer and the need to replace “useless” Onana.

Is a new goalkeeper really necessary?

While Onana has faced criticism for his performances this season, it’s clear that improving the attack and midfield will be Amorim’s primary focus this summer.

Given Manchester United’s well-documented financial constraints and the need for a near-complete squad overhaul, the club will have to prioritise key positions carefully.

Reports suggest United may have a budget of around £20–30 million before factoring in potential player sales. Departures of high-profile names such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho could significantly boost that figure.

United have managed just 44 Premier League goals this season, just eight more than newly promoted Ipswich Town. The trio of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund, and Joshua Zirkzee have contributed a combined total of just 13 league goals, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen the front line.
