The cups were touted as Manchester United’s best path to ending their trophy drought this season, and they are one step away from a crucial semi-final.

Having disposed of Aston Villa and Burnley earlier in the campaign, Erik ten Hag‘s Manchester United host Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

The League One side shocked Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in the last round, winning via a penalty shootout and two of their other three games in the EFL Cup this season have been won this way, something United will need to watch out for.

With that being said, UtdDistrict preview the form of the two sides going into this fixture.

Manchester United – W, W, W, W, W

Manchester United go into this fixture in perfect form and playing maybe the best football they have played since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club. Since returning from the World Cup they have dispatched of Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bournemouth and Everton, scoring 12 goals in the process and conceding just one (which was a catastrophic goalkeeping error).

Marcus Rashford has spearheaded this charge, scoring a goal in all five of these games and he looks well and truly back to the level that saw him become one of English football’s most feared forwards, with an argument to be made that he is even better now than he ever was before.

At the heart of things has been Casemiro, who has picked up exactly where he left off by completely and utterly dominating any and every footballer that dares to come near him on a football pitch. He has picked up a goal and assist since club football’s return, showcasing his completeness in midfield.

Charlton Athletic – W, W, L, D, W

Charlton Athletic enter this tie off the back off two consecutive wins in league play against Portsmouth and Lincoln City, but it was the win in the last round of the cup that will see them come to Old Trafford with genuine confidence. The Seagulls have been Premier League high-flyers this season and did not field a weak side at The Valley but the side who sit 12th in League One dug deep to take it to penalties, where they won in sudden death.

Since that win, which came under interim manager Anthony Hayes, the Addicks have appointed a permanent manager in Dean Holden and he has won two of his four games in charge.

This game is a game unlike any other in English football, and whilst United are overwhelming favourites for this tie they should not underestimate this team who have shown real bravado already this season against Premier League opposition, and have won three penalty shootouts already – a situation United have struggled with in recent years.
