Manchester United to ‘hold talks’ with star aiming for Premier League return as Rasmus Højlund swap transfer ‘offered’

Manchester United are reportedly set to hold talks with a player aiming for a Premier League return this summer as a swap deal for Rasmus Højlund is offered.

Manchester United are set for a make-or-break summer transfer window, with Ruben Amorim’s success solely hinging on how well he can turn his squad over and acquire players that suit his playing style.

United’s forward line this season has been extremely lacklustre, with Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund combining for a total of 12 goals this season in the Premier League.

Struggling playing as lone strikers, Højlund and Zirkzee have been bailed out by Bruno Fernandes in the midfield, who has scored almost 20 per cent of United’s goals in the league.

With Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford in doubt and a move to Serie A leaders Napoli seeming likely, it could be another Serie A winger who could replace him in Manchester.

United to hold talks with Lookman

United have been recently linked with Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the club sending scouts to watch him. They were, however, also keeping tabs on Nigerian international Ademola Lookman.

With several fallouts between the 27-year-old and manager Gian Piero Gasperini, Lookman is looking increasingly likely to return to the Premier League in the summer, following previous stints at Everton, Fulham and Leicester City.

A report from CaughtOffside has stated that although Barcelona have contacted his representatives to evaluate a potential move for Lookman, their ongoing financial difficulties could pose a serious obstacle to his transfer.

Amid this, United are one side that have been touted as a club that will look to open dialogue with Lookman’s representatives this summer, with the player eyeing a potential return to the Premier League.

Recent reports have claimed that Atalanta, Lookman’s current side, want to see if they can offer the English winger as a makeweight in a deal to bring Rasmus Højlund back to the Serie A club this summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has recently stated that the Danish international is highly regarded among Italian clubs, with Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli having all been in contact with United earlier this month regarding a potential deal.

Is Lookman the right fit for United?

On paper, it looks like the Nigerian would be a great fit for United, with the player notching 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions this season.

He would also be familiar with the tactical setup that Amorim employs. Both Atalanta and United deploy the 3-4-3 system, so there wouldn’t be much time needed to adapt to Amorim’s tactics.

However, Lookman would be best suited to play as the left attacking midfielder. With the almost inevitable signing of Matheus Cunha, do United need to sign another player in the number 10 position?

There is already plenty of competition for that left-sided spot, and with Lookman not being an out-and-out striker, United should focus more heavily on acquiring a clinical number nine to lead the line going into next season.
