Manchester United are reported to hold an internal meeting this week with Michael Carrick surrounding the possibility of January signings.
Despite the dismissal of Rúben Amorim earlier this month, Manchester United are still pressing ahead with their current transfer plans as they look to add to the squad that Michael Carrick inherited.
The holes in United’s squad are apparent, with reinforcements needed in defence, midfield, and on the left wing, although it has been made clear that United will not panic-buy any player just to fill a gap.
The club’s mantra for the 2026 winter and summer markets is that the majority of their business will be done in the summer, when they feel their targets will be available and they have time to negotiate a more reasonable fee with opposing clubs.
However, with the race for Champions League football very much on, United may still turn to the transfer window to try and add an extra player before the campaign ends.
United to hold transfer meeting this week
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United will hold an internal meeting at the beginning of this week, with Carrick involved in discussions over the club’s plans for the January transfer window should the club suddenly decide to recruit this month.
Romano explains on YouTube that Carrick “is not the one who decides”, but his opinion is valued after starting his United spell in fantastic fashion with their 2-0 win over Manchester City on the weekend.
The meeting will focus on whether United want to “go for an opportunity” in the market — possibly in midfield, a winger, or at striker — or continue with the current squad for the remaining 16 games of the campaign.
Romano adds that things are “very quiet at the moment”, and the club may choose not to change its plan, with “big investments” expected in the summer once a permanent manager is appointed.
United could already have their winger
According to English reports elsewhere, the position United are looking at most intensely this month is at left-wing.
Carrick’s set-up against City showed that he likes his wide players to maintain their width in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 formation, with Amad executing this to perfection on the right. But, if the club want a left winger to do just that, they may already have one in Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu.
Against City, goalscorer Dorgu was nigh-on perfect with his execution of tactical instructions, knowing when to defend, attack, and hold his spot out wide, as well as making darting runs in-field with perfect timing.
If United wants to sign a new left-winger, it likely wouldn’t be an expensive first-team option but instead a squad player, and Dorgu has already shown himself to be at least of this level. With Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo also about to play on the left, it may not be the wisest move.
