Manchester United tell Aston Villa the ‘price they want to pay’ for Emi Martínez

Manchester United have reportedly informed Aston Villa of the price they are willing to pay to sign Emi Martínez this summer.

Manchester United are said to be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, with Rúben Amorim continuing his overhaul of the squad ahead of his first full season at the helm.

Although Amorim and André Onana enjoy a strong working relationship, as exclusively reported by UtdDistrict, the Cameroonian’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains unclear.

Onana, 29, has shown glimpses of the quality that prompted his move from Inter Milan, but inconsistency has cast doubt over his place in the side moving forward.

After sealing a £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha and pushing to sign Bryan Mbeumo for a similar fee, Amorim is now expected to prioritise the addition of a new goalkeeper in the coming weeks.

With Onana ruled out of pre-season and potentially the start of the Premier League campaign due to a hamstring injury, and Altay Bayindir likely to leave this summer, United are in urgent need of fresh options between the sticks.

United back in the mix for Martínez

Earlier this summer, United were closely linked with Aston Villa shot-stopper Emi Martínez, who is said to be very keen to make the switch to Old Trafford this summer.

Martínez has had an interesting rise to the top of world football, spending many years as a reserve shotstopper at Arsenal before finally getting his chance at Aston Villa. He has since won the World Cup with Argentina and has been named Goalkeeper of the Year on two occasions.

However, despite many links between Martínez and the club, it was initially thought that a lot of the noise was agent-driven and coming from the player’s side.

But, in a fresh turn of events, Argentinian transfer specialist Gason Edul revealed that, amid Onana’s injury, United had now opened negotiations to sign Martínez from Villa this summer.

How much are United willing to pay for Martínez?

Following the above reports, La Nacion have now relayed the latest with respect to how much Martínez might cost United this summer.

According to the publication, while Villa are requesting a £40 million transfer fee, United have informed the Birmingham club that they are willing to pay around £33 million to secure the 32-year-old.

Villa are reportedly willing to negotiate with United surrounding his sale, and the player himself sees a move to United as a “significant step” in his career.

Although Martínez ticks the box of having significant Premier League experience, some may point out that highly-rated goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp may be the better long-term option for United, with the 23-year-old available for around £17 million.
