Manchester United target has “direct pathway” to Old Trafford, his current club are now “concerned”
Manchester United’s chiefs are trying to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad in key positions in the transfer window.
The United manager has encountered challenges during his tenure so far, recording just five wins in 13 matches, which has showcased the need for reinforcements.
Securing a left-wingback remains a key priority for Ruben Amorim due to the lack of quality in the role at Old Trafford.
Diogo Dalot has played most of the games there and does not look entirely comfortable. Meanwhile, Luke Shaw remains injured and there are question marks over Tyrell Malacia after his long spell out.
However, it has been well-reported that the club must raise funds through player sales to bring in any new signings this month.
Why PSG are “concerned” about United and Mendes
The ideal transfer for that position appears to be Nuno Mendes of Paris Saint-Germain, who does not seem to want to stay at the French club.
United have an interest in the player who previously worked under Amorim in Portugal but a deal would be difficult mid-season.
It is more likely that United revisit the opportunity in the summer but new details have also explained why United have an upper hand in this potential deal.
Duncan Castles has spoken on the fact that Mendes’ agent has now joined the same group as Amorim’s agents, which is something that PSG are ‘concerned’ about.
“Ruben Amorim was the manager who promoted Nuno Mendes to Sporting’s first-team in 2020 and he has another strong link to the player,” Castles said on the Transfers Podcast.
“Mendes shares an agent with Bruno Fernandes, who recently became part of the same agency group as Ruben Amorim’s representatives.
“So there is a direct link and pathway to the player, something that PSG, I’m told, are concerned about.
“They have not received any offer from Manchester United at this stage but they’re well aware of the interest… I’m told it’s unlikely there will be a move this window but it is a strong factor for the summer.”
United still need a wingback now
While that would be a great deal to complete in the summer, it also begs the question who United will target this month.
A player who is able to operate in that wingback role is needed and solutions need to be found at Old Trafford in the short-term to help improve United’s season.
United could look at a cheaper alternative who could ultimately become a backup if Mendes is signed in the summer window.
Re-signing Alvaro Fernandez from Benfica still seems to make the most sense for United, who can buy the defender back for around £16 million.
He has been excelling at Benfica and it seems worth bringing him back to the club for that low figure due to his experience playing that role and the attributes he’s been able to refine in Portugal.
