Manchester United star’s “exit plan” explained as David Ornstein reveals new Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike updates

Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein have issued the latest on three transfers involving Manchester United as the transfer window reopens.

Manchester United are nearing their second signing of the summer after confirming the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

The 26-year-old Brazilian international is expected to complete his £62.5 million move once he returns from international duty, with a five-year deal lined up.

Rúben Amorim is continuing his pursuit of attacking reinforcements, with Bryan Mbeumo emerging as the next key target. The Brentford forward has expressed a clear desire to join United.

Despite a bid of up to £55 million being rejected last week, negotiations remain active, and the club are working to finalise the transfer in the coming days.

Ornstein issues Ekitike and Mbeumo updates

With United’s deal for Mbeumo still not yet finalised, despite the player’s clear preference to sign for Amorim’s club, some doubts and worries have started to creep in amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, transfer expert David Ornstein has explained on the Athletic FC Podcast that there is still a very good chance the deal will go through.

“United are exploring doing the Bryan Mbeumo deal, and he wants to join them,” Ornstein explained. “There’s a VERY good chance that deal happens, but they’re not there yet.”

Speaking further, the English journalist also provided an update on United’s pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, explaining that any deal involving Amorim’s club is not as advanced as some claim.

“I don’t know that they’re going for him fully, so I think that’s a bit hypothetical,” Ornstein continued.

“Yeah, it seems that there’s been some enquiries, but that’s kind of their job, to be asking after players and understanding the conditions of a deal, maybe being interested in the player, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to do it.”

“When you speak with the English clubs, they feel that they can pry him away for a bit lower [than the £85 million asking price].

“Maybe if a club got to £80 million with some add-ons or whatever, I don’t know how they would structure it – but there is some optimism that it’s not quite as high, ultimately, as Eintracht are letting it be known.”

Romano explains Sancho’s United exit plan

Another deal involving United that will start to develop in the coming weeks is the departure of Jadon Sancho, who is out of favour having spent last season on loan at Chelsea.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano detailed Sancho’s “exit plan” on his YouTube channel, explaining that United’s current stance is to prioritise a permanent transfer over a loan deal. The club are actively seeking to cash in on the winger during this summer window and are not considering temporary moves at this stage.

The aim is to generate a profit and permanently secure Sancho’s services following his return from a failed approach by Chelsea, who were unable to reach an agreement on personal terms.

Talks are underway with potential buyers, but Sancho’s high salary remains a key hurdle. Napoli are among the clubs interested, though they are not prepared to cover his full wages and are currently only open to a loan deal.

Unless United can find a buyer willing to meet both the transfer fee and salary demands, clubs like Napoli may bide their time and wait to see if the situation changes later in the window. The club’s intention remains clear: to part ways with Sancho permanently this summer.
