Ian Wright has told one Manchester United star that he needs to make a ‘massive transformation’ to succeed under Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United confirmed last week that Ruben Amorim would take charge of the club following the sacking of Erik ten Hag in late October.

The 39-year-old head coach will start his new role on 11 December after it was agreed he would carry on at Sporting Lisbon until the international break.

Many fans are excited to see how Amorim will set up the United team and are questioning which players will thrive and who will be surplus to requirements.

Ian Wright says Zirkzee needs massive transformation

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has weighed in with his opinion on the striker situation at Old Trafford under Amorim.

The Portuguese coach has Viktor Gyokeres at Sporting and the 26-year-old quickly made his name as one of the best goalscorers in Europe under his management.

With 17 goals already this term, Gyokeres has shown his quality in Portugal and in the Champions League. United have struggled in that department with Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund.

Wright believes that Højlund could end up being a success under Amorim with what he has shown at Old Trafford, but that Zirkzee would need to make big changes to succeed.

“Do you know something? When I look at the strikers at Manchester United, I look at [Rasmus] Hojlund and Zirkzee,” he said on the Wrighty’s House podcast.

“Going forward, as a United player to take the club to the level they need to be – top-four, Champions League, title challengers – I can’t see in any formation Zirkzee making it from what I’ve seen so far.

“I can see it with Hojlund, he looks like a future player with better players around him. He gives me the impression that if he gets in and around the box and he gets chances, he can go hot. I don’t see the same with Zirkzee.

“I look at him and his movement, I don’t see anything in his game that makes me think, ‘Okay, there he is, I see what he can do.’

“I’m trying to think of Ruben Amorim coming in and who he’s going to play. Zirkzee will need to go through some massive transformation to play in the team ahead of other players.

“He’s definitely not a natural goalscorer. I’m still waiting to see it from him.”
