Manchester United respond to Manuel Ugarte loan approach as Michael Carrick’s preference becomes clear

Manchester United have responded to a loan approach from a European club for midfielder Manuel Ugarte in the final weeks of the January transfer window.

Manchester United are reportedly targeting two midfield signings this year, indicating dissatisfaction with their current midfield options.

Casemiro is expected to depart when his contract runs out at the end of the season even though he has impressed this term, while doubts continue to surround Manuel Ugarte.

Since arriving from PSG in the summer of 2024, Ugarte has found it difficult to deliver consistent performances at Old Trafford.

With Michael Carrick now in charge at United for the rest of the season, it seems unlikely that Ugarte will start many games, especially as the team are only competing in the Premier League.

United respond to Ugarte loan approach

Due to his squad-player status, Ugarte has been subject to January transfer links, with various clubs reportedly interested in signing him permanently or on loan.

Ajax are among those teams as the Dutch side look for midfield improvements after an underwhelming Eredivisie campaign so far sees them 18 points adrift of first-placed PSV Eindhoven.

According to The Athletic, the Amsterdam-based club have made an inquiry over Ugarte on a loan deal, however a deal is currently viewed as unlikely.

The report states that United, who are unlikely to make any of their own signings this month, have so far declined the proposal from Ajax.

Carrick’s midfield preference seems clear

Ugarte might not be departing United this month but it does seem like his minutes will continue to be limited under Carrick, who clearly prefers Kobbie Mainoo in the midfield alongside Casemiro.

Although, Ugarte did come off the bench against City and while there will only be one game a week for the rest of the season, he will likely get game-time off the bench when Casemiro needs to come off later in games.

The Uruguayan has improved his form in recent weeks following a disastrous start to the campaign but it is still hard to see how he breaks into the midfield at Old Trafford.

United cannot really afford to lose him as a depth option right now due to the limited midfield options but his future will certainly be a talking point in the summer window as the club looks to sign at least two midfielders for the squad.
