Manchester United have released a statement following Mason Greenwood’s permement transfer to Marseille being confirmed.

Greenwood, 22 spent last season on loan at Getafe after it was confirmed that he would not resume his career at United despite being cleared of the charges against his name.

The CPS confirmed that “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” in February last year.

However, United went through their own internal process around Greenwood, and came to the conclusion that he would return to Erik ten Hag’s squad before changing their decision following public backlash.

It was clear that United wanted to sell Greenwood this summer and a range of clubs were interested in the 22-year-old striker.

Marseille eventually came out on top after agreeing a £26 million fee with United. The deal also has a favourable sell-on clause included.

However, the French city’s mayor came out against the deal last week and seemingly stalled the transfer, with the player uncertain on a move.

Eventually, an agreement was made and Greenwood has now been confirmed as a new Marseille player.

“Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer,” a club statement read.

“The 22 year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.

“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”
