Manchester United’s referee for their fixture against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon has been confirmed by the Premier League.
Manchester United’s next test comes with a trip to the south coast, where Rúben Amorim’s men will face a resurgent Bournemouth side on Sunday afternoon.
United were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Andoni Iraola’s team at Old Trafford late last year, and Amorim will be determined to put things right this time around.
Their last league outing saw the Reds suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolves, with Pablo Sarabia’s spectacular late free-kick proving the difference and denying André Onana a shutout.
Attention at Old Trafford, however, is gradually turning towards the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao in early May — a crucial tie that could see United return to the Champions League and secure an extra £85 million in financial backing.
Confirmed officials
Peter Bankes (pictured below) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in Bournemouth. Bankes has officiated 20 Premier League fixtures this season, two in the Championship, and five across the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Bankes has met United three times this season, with each of these three coming in the Premier League. First off, he officiated a 3-0 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford, with his next coming during a 3-1 loss against Brighton, also in Manchester.
Most recently, he was the referee for United’s 1-0 loss against Tottenham away from home as Amorim’s side lost by a single goal in North London.
So far this season, Bankes has issued 79 yellow cards in the Premier League and 108 across all competitions. He has issued two red cards this season, both through double yellow cards, and has awarded six penalties, all of which came in the Premier League.
During the game, Eddie Smart and Nick Greenhalgh will serve as Bankes’ assistant referees. Tim Robinson will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Iraola.
John Brooks has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Natalie Aspinall will act as assistant VAR.
