Manchester United receive ‘initial contact’ from European giants as potential January exit explained

Manchester United have reportedly received contact from a big European club over the potential loan signing of one player who is currently out of favour in Ruben Amorim’s team.

In recent weeks, Manchester United have experienced a brilliant upturn in form, with the team winning three on the bounce including a dramatic last gasp win away at Anfield.

In this time, United’s forward line on the whole have also been well amongst the goals, with Mbeumo scoring 3 times in this period, as well as Šesko and Cunha both getting off the mark for United.

However, it has not been all smooth sailing for all of the United squad during this period, with some players feeling dissatisfied with the amount of playing time that is being provided to them by manager Rúben Amorim.

One of these players in particular would be Joshua Zirkzee, who has previously been linked with a move away before but had reportedly chosen to fight for his place instead.

Despite this, in recent months, with the arrival of Benjamin Šeško and still no real improvement in playing time, the Dutchman has once again been linked with away, with a European giant reportedly interested and already in contact with United.

AS Roma make contact with United over Zirkzee

According to reports coming from TalkSport’s Ben Jacobs, Italian giants AS Roma have made contact with United regarding a loan move for Zirkzee in the January transfer window.

The United forward is actively looking for a move away from United in January in a bid to be in contention for the Dutch squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup taking place in the United States.

With Zirkzee feeling he won’t get the chance to prove to Ronald Koeman that he should be on the plane to the US in the summer whilst remaining at United, this has since opened the door for Roma to enquire about a move, as well as several other clubs who have reportedly shown interest, such as West Ham United.

Despite Zirkzee showing flashes of brilliance in moments last season, such as his brace against Everton, as well as committing his future to United after previous interest being shown from abroad, circumstances now seem to have changed for the young Dutchman.

The impact of Zirkzee’s potential exit

Despite not always being provided with vast amounts of playing time, Zirkzee remains a largely popular figure on the training ground, with him always appearing to be smiling and joking with his fellow teammates.

This was more evident than ever following the Reds’ victory at Liverpool, where, after the game, Zirkzee then took to the Anfield pitch to congratulate his teammates, with him being shown to be celebrating with the squad and captain Bruno Fernandes on Sky Sports coverage of the game after the full-time whistle.

A Zirkzee exit in January could potentially damage the squad morale due to him being such a valued player in the dressing room, and one player would not like to see him exit the club, especially in January.

As well as the potential damage to the morale a potential Zirkzee move mid-season could cause, the reduction in squad depth for Ruben Amorim’s team could also grow to become a problem as the season goes on, if Šeško were to get injured or unavailable, United would be left light in the striking department.

However, ultimately, the decision will likely come down to the player’s wishes. Despite United not wanting the player to leave, they would allow Zirkzee to depart if a valid loan bid were to come in that the forward would be set on.
