Manchester United have received an update regarding their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo after news broke that the Brentford forward has significant interest from Tottenham Hotspur, which is set to grow after the appointment of Thomas Frank.
Bryan Mbeumo worked wonders for Thomas Frank’s Brentford, and vice versa, and reports in recent days have suggested the pair are set to be reunited at Tottenham Hotspur in the next couple of weeks, with the side from London stepping up their interest in the winger.
David Ornstein confirmed that Manchester United were the player’s preferred destination in a report, but news in the last few days has suggested the appointment of Frank at Tottenham has swayed the £60m-plus-rated forward’s decision back towards joining the Lilywhites.
Talks have remained ongoing between United and Brentford as they search for that all-important agreement, with a first bid already being rejected and a second bid yet to be made.
United have received a boost in that pursuit in the last number of hours, with Mbeumo making his desires known despite the interest from Spurs.
Mbeumo still prefers United over Spurs
According to a report from TeamTalk, Mbeumo is still leaning towards a move to Old Trafford this summer despite interest from Tottenham, with the forward expected to join United if they can agree on a deal with Brentford in the coming days.
Brentford are said to value Mbeumo close enough to Matheus Cunha’s price tag of £62.5m, and the clubs are working together to try and come to an agreement that suits all parties, with all parties said to be keen on getting the deal done.
Frank would have been eager to try and get Mbeumo in at Spurs, but the Cameroon international is likely to have known the destination of his new manager for a while longer than the media have, and his desire from the start has always been Manchester United.
Mbeumo turned down moves to Arsenal and Newcastle United for a potential move to United, and he is still expected to turn down a move to Spurs to join the Reds despite the strong reports recently.
A good sign for United
Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo showing clear desire to join Manchester United is a really good sign for the club, and it shows that despite how bad last season was, they are still a behemoth in comparison to other clubs.
Andy Mitten posted a report for The Athletic today, using the old adage that the club are still massive, but the truth is plain and simple for everyone to see, and the fact that they can still attract these players despite the poor form of last year is a credit to how big the club really is.
Signing players that want to play for the club is a huge green flag, and it’s a big step away from the moves like Alexis Sanchez in the past being solely money driven.
It will be a major coup if the Reds can get the deal over the line in the coming days.
