Manchester United receive clear response after making “rich” bid for £30m “technically strong” star

Manchester United have reportedly made a bid for Lecce star Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window.

Ruben Amorim is hopeful that Manchester United can secure new signings for his first-team squad this month.

The United manager has faced a challenging start at Old Trafford, with only six wins in 14 games, making it evident that reinforcements are necessary.

A left-wingback is a key priority following Amorim’s formation change, but player sales will be required to fund any transfers.

Nuno Mendes appeared to be the favoured option, but it appears unlikely that he will be moving away from Paris Saint-Germain mid-season.

That has led the club to looking at options elsewhere.

Lecce respond to United’s bid for Dorgu

According to a new report from Nicolò Schira, Lecce have turned down a bid for Patrick Dorgu, which was described to be “rich”, from United.

It was explained that the Italian club are unwilling to sell Dorgu during the January transfer window as they try and claw their way closer the the top half of the Serie A table.

Dorgu has made 21 appearances for Lecce so far this season, playing 10 games at right-wing and eight times as a left-back or wingback. The Dane has been described as “physically and technically strong”.

The 20-year-old’s ability to play on both flanks–especially as a wingback–is something that United clearly admire. In fact, club scouts were “blown away” when they watched him earlier this year.

However, United will be up against several other European clubs to try and sign him when the time comes next summer, unless they try to convince Lecce with an improved offer.

It has previously been claimed that it would take around £30 million to sign Dorgu but the fee of United’s opening bid was not included in the aforementioned report.

United must sign a wingback in January

Both Dorgu and Mendes are very good players and would almost certainly improve Amorim’s team, considering their comfortability in the wingback role.

Players like Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui simply don’t have the right attributes to properly excel in the position like Amorim wants.

“I don’t know how long it is going to take [for players to be comfortable in the system], but the profiles… sometimes you can understand it’s not the right ones,” Amorim admitted last week.

United are in dire need of an immediate improvement on the flank this month but they will also need to make sure that they don’t waste cash on a player for the sake of it.

Club chiefs will likely continue to work on making a signing in the position this month possible, as they should, but they will also be looking at whether it would be more beneficial to wait for a favoured option at the end of the campaign.

If that was to be the case, it would leave Amorim in a very difficult position heading into the second half of the season.
