Manchester United have provided an important update on the contract of one forgotten starlet amid concern over his future.

United’s under-18s have excelled this term, winning the league and Premier League cup.

The last youth team to have such success was the 2022 FA Youth Cup winners. From that group, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have become first-team regulars.

However, Sam Mather was another talent within that squad who was extremely important to the team’s success. He played every game in the FA Youth Cup run, registering three goals and two assists.

Mather, 19, was a hot topic among the fanbase who paid attention to the youth setup, but he suffered a long-term injury afterwards, which impacted his development.

The winger returned to action this season and has been on fine form for the Under-21s and Rochdale, where he has spent time on a flexi-loan, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Mather played 10 games for the National League outfit, starting just six of those. He scored two goals in that time. He also has six goals and one assist for the U21s in nine appearances.

The aforementioned report stated that the Reds created the flexi-loan system last season to allow youngsters to gain senior experience whilst remaining involved in the day-to-day environment at Carrington.

Importantly, despite concerns that Mather’s contract expired at the end of the current season, the aforementioned report has confirmed that this is not the case.

Instead, Mather has another year remaining on his United contract, expiring in June 2025.

The report added that a decision will be made on his next steps once the season has ended.
