Following an admission from Rúben Amorim earlier in the week, Manchester United are set to revisit and strengthen a position they just addressed next summer.
Much of Manchester United’s summer spending was focused on addressing the meagre 44 goals that the club scored in last season’s Premier League campaign.
Having spent around £214 million to bring in a brand new forward line in Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, the club then shifted focus to signing a midfielder, but were priced out of a move for Carlos Baleba.
With André Onana failing to give fans any confidence that he can consistently perform in goal at Old Trafford, United opted to sign the talented Belgian goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, on deadline day for £18 million.
Next summer, United are set to revisit the market for a midfielder, but are also surprisingly set to go back in for a position they have already addressed.
New goalkeeper a priority
Before Onana’s surprise loan to Trabzonspor, it was thought that the three current keepers would breed healthy competition by competing for the No.1 spot, but as Samuel Luckhurst reports for The Sun, United are bizarrely set to prioritise the keeper position once again at the end of this season.
Altay Bayındır has started all of United’s games so far, conceding eight goals in his five appearances this season. Lammens is yet to be given a chance, with Amorim opting to use the Turkish keeper for the double header against Manchester City and Chelsea. The Belgian talent is expected to feature against Brentford and Sunderland before the October international break.
In terms of potential targets, both Mike Maignan and Emiliano Martinez have been linked with potential moves. Maignan will become a free agent at the end of this season after declining to sign an extension, meaning United could get a cut-price deal for the Frenchman in January, or on a free in the summer, but will face competition from several clubs for one of the best keepers in Europe.
In the summer window, United’s shortlist for keepers was seemingly narrowed down to Martinez and Lammens, with United failing with a loan enquiry for the World Cup winner, eventually opting for the talented Belgian keeper.
A United move for the Argentine keeper was said to be a ‘dream’, and the club could yet still target him if Lammens fails to hit the ground running, with it previously being reported that there is a ‘real chance’ that an experienced keeper will be targeted and a player like the two-time Yashin Trophy winner with vital Premier League experience would be very beneficial.
Man Utd to heavily invest in a midfielder
Luckhurst also reported that United plan to invest a significant amount of money to sign at least one central midfielder, and are set to revisit a move for Brighton’s Baleba.
With Casemiro set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this season, United could be able to finance a move for a replacement after freeing up his £300,000-a-week wage.

With the long-term futures of Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes all in question, United must sign at least one midfielder next summer.
One name who has been touted as a potential alternative for Baleba is Eduardo Camavinga, with the ‘brilliant’ Frenchman’s game time having been limited this season following the appointment of Xabi Alonso.
