One Manchester United outcast “will be released” at the end of the 2024/25 campaign as long as one thing does not happen.

The Reds signed five players for Erik ten Hag’s first-team this summer, including Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee, and also managed to sell plenty of players.

United’s new-look recruitment team, including Dan Ashworth as sporting director and Jason Wilcox as technical director, have impressed so far and are already looking ahead to next summer.

While additional signings will be crucial, United’s chiefs will be equally judged on their ability to continue selling unwanted players.

United planning to release Lindelöf

One player who remains at the club for now after being linked with a summer move away is Victor Lindelöf, the defender who joined the club in 2017.

Lindelöf did not move on in the latest transfer window, partly due to an injury he currently has, but it is clear that United’s leaders are not planning to change their view on his future.

According to a new report from the Manchester Evening News, the Swedish defender “will be released” by the club next summer when his contract expires.

It was clarified that will only be the case if they do not end up selling the 30-year-old in the January transfer window.

There were tentative reports about interest from the likes of Napoli and Fiorentina in the final weeks of the summer window, but nothing advanced. United will likely allow him to move on for a small fee if any clubs are interested.

The report also claimed that this will likely be Jonny Evans’ final season of his playing career.

Squad revamp finally happening

It appears that INEOS are actually planning a proper revamp of the squad at Old Trafford.

We aren’t going to see a new contract for Lindelöf if he manages to find himself back in the team and playing well. There is a decision that he is leaving, and some good form won’t change that.

This will follow sales of Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Hannibal Mejbri, and others. Jadon Sancho will also be leaving permanently next summer.

The revamp looks to be well underway and now those in charge must make sure that the additions to the squad help improve the overall level.
