Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya in a bid to provide David de Gea with fierce competition for the number-one spot at Old Trafford.

That’s according to a report from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, who explains that United are among a host of clubs keeping track of Raya’s situation. Tottenham Hotspur would like him to replace Hugo Lloris.

His contract at the Gtech Community Stadium runs out at the end of next season. The goalkeeper revealed in an interview with The Athletic that he has turned down two contract extensions with the London club, further explaining that he wants to fight for titles.

Erik ten Hag’s side are looking for competition to fellow Spaniard David de Gea, with recent reports claiming the United manager believes his team would control games better if they had a goalkeeper more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Raya has been one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in the Premier League since Brentford were promoted last term.

The Reds are in negotiations with De Gea over a new contract, which would see a significant pay reduction on his current 375,000-a-week deal.

However, the need for competition – or the potential for the passing of the baton – could be important as United look to improve further under their Dutch manager.

Dean Henderson is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, however, the aforementioned report added that it’s unlikely that he will be welcomed back at Old Trafford.

It has been reported that goalkeeper is just one of four positions that Ten Hag is looking to strengthen in the summer as he prepares for the next phase of his rebuild at Old Trafford. A centre-back, central midfielder and striker are also on the agenda in the next transfer market should the budget allow it.
