Manchester United monitoring ex-midfield target Ruben Amorim wanted to sign at Old Trafford

With nothing coming to fruition after previously receiving interest from United in the previous summer transfer window, it appears that a potential move could be back on the cards for one of the Red Devils’ former midfield targets.

After a summer window that saw a total revamp of United’s attack, which saw the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško join the attacking ranks, it now appears United have set their sights on the midfield ahead of the coming summer window.

With it now widely being expected that United’s transfer strategy for this summer’s window is to prioritise strengthening the squad’s midfield, now seeing it as the next area in need of rennovation with the attack now being seen to.

With Casemiro already announcing plans for his departure, as well as question marks over Manuel Ugarte and even the captain, Bruno Fernandes, we can expect to see major activity in the market this summer at United, with a somewhat familiar name now once again being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United monitering Hjulmand

The Dane had originally been linked to United in the previous summer transfer window under Ruben Amorim, who had previously worked with and signed the player during his time as manager of Sporting Lisbon.

Now giving that Ruben Amorim has since been relieved of his duties as head coach of Manchester United, many would have assumed that any potential transfer for Hjulmand, would now be unlikely.

However, according to reports from A Bola, it appears that the Danish international may potentially have a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting in regards to a potential future exit, with United said to be monitoring the situation.

“An agreement was reached for him to continue until the end of the 2025/2026 season, at which point Sporting guaranteed they would be open to negotiations. However, there was no promise of a sale or an exact price for the transfer. Only the openness to negotiations for figures in the order of €50 million.”

Would Hjulmand be a good fit?

As he has already been identified by the club’s scouting department as a potential option, it is fair to say that there is somewhat confidence around the idea of Hjulmand strengthening United’s midfield

However, the debate that will likely be had between fans and pundits alike will be that of questioning as to whether Hjulmand would necessarily be the best option United could go for.

With United widely rumoured to already have a shortlist compiled of many other quality players in this position, with Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba being two Premier League proven examples of this, some would argue that choosing to pursue Hjulmand over some of these names, could be risky and potentially call the club’s ambition into question.

Although there is no doubt over the quality that Hjulmand possesses, as this has been proven consistently throughout multiple campaigns in the Champions League now, it’s just whether this quality will be able to effectively transfer over to the Premier League.

As a potential squad option to challenge for a starting position, Hjulmand could be a great fit with the potential he has and the quality he has already displayed.

However, with the available names of the quality previously mentioned, many will argue that United should move in more proven targets for the position, especially after the success of adopting the strategy in the previous summer window.
