Manchester United make club-to-club contact for “perfect” player as Rúben Amorim’s £47m star targeted by AS Monaco

Manchester United have reportedly initiated club-to-club contacts for a “perfect” signing this summer as AS Monaco look to swoop in for one of Rúben Amorim’s players.

Manchester United are prioritising player sales this summer as Rúben Amorim begins a major squad overhaul at Old Trafford.

The club have already completed the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are continuing talks with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo, despite their initial £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons bid being rejected.

United remain in the market for a striker and a midfielder, and could also look to bring in a goalkeeper. A number of players will leave once their contracts expire at the end of the month, with further departures expected in the weeks ahead.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho are all expected to leave, while uncertainty still surrounds the future of Rasmus Højlund.

Onana being considered by AS Monaco

Another player whose future remains uncertain is André Onana. Although English reports suggest that the current expectation is that the goalkeeper will stay, as United are not desperate to sell him, should they receive a suitable offer for Onana, he is far from being unsellable.

Amorim maintains a good working relationship with the player, as exclusively revealed by UtdDistrict last month. Still, the club are considering signing a new goalkeeper with the potential departure of second-choice Altay Bayındır also on the cards this summer.

According to the French outlet L’Equipe, Onana, who United signed for £47 million from Inter Milan in 2023, is now under consideration at Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, who are looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer after neither Radoslaw Majecki nor Philipp Köhn proved themselves last campaign.

However, Monaco are also said to be interested in Chelsea outcast Djordje Petrović for the position, who may be a cheaper option than Onana, considering that United would want to recoup as much of the £47 million fee as possible and are not inclined to sell the player.

United initiate talks for Martínez

Amid Onana’s potential departure, a report from the national Argentine outlet Olé has claimed that United are seriously considering signing Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martínez, having spoken with his agents.

According to Olé, United have now initiated contact with Villa regarding the 32-year-old, who is open to leaving Birmingham for United despite the club not playing in the Champions League at Old Trafford next season.

With Onana often making United’s back line and fans in the stadium nervous, Martínez has been touted as a player with a mentality that would be “perfect” for the club.

Although other clubs remain interested in Martínez, Olé further report that United are the only side who have made formal contact with Villa thus far, although it is stressed that talks between the two clubs does not mean an agreement will be reached.

There have been reports from within England that Martínez would cost United around £40 million this summer; however, Olé posits that a deal could be struck for a lower price, with an agreement of around £33 million plus add-ons a possibility.
