Manchester United legend returns to the club following Darren Fletcher announcement

A Manchester United legend is set to return to the club as an assistant manager to Darren Fletcher, ahead of the side’s clash with Burnley.

Following a 1-1 draw on Sunday against bitter rivals Leeds United, Ruben Amorim was dismissed from his duty as Manchester United head coach.

The Portuguese tactician was sacked due to explosive comments that he made regarding United’s higher-ups, as well as highlighting a sense of entitlement within the club.

It has since been announced that Darren Fletcher will take over from Amorim on an interim basis, although former Red Ole Gunnar Solskjær has also thrown his hat into the ring for the role.

With the Red Devils up against Burnley on Wednesday night, Fletcher will take to the touchline, accompanied by another former United star who is set to adopt an assistant manager role.

Evans set for assistant role

As covered by BBC Sport, Jonny Evans has returned to United as an assistant to the interim head coach, with his first task being a trip to Turf Moor.

Fletcher and Evans played together at Old Trafford for nine years, stretching from 2006 to 2015, before they both joined West Bromwich Albion.

The pair will be hoping to kickstart their reign on the touchline with a win against relegation-battling Burnley, who have only managed 12 points from their first 20 games.

Speaking in his press conference, Fletcher was asked who was assisting him. “So Travis Binnion, who leads the Under-21s, who I started my coaching career with in the Academy, whom I’ve know for five years that I’ve been here,” he began.

“I actually couldn’t ask for anybody better beside me than Travis, we’ve got such a close relationship together, for such a long time, [he is] somebody I respect, somebody who I’ve learned a lot from.

“His assistant, Alan Wright, who is newly joined [at] the club as well, so the Under-21s staff come and join me, and Jonny Evans has come in to help as well.

“[He is] somebody who has a great association with the club, recently played, knows the players, is comfortable in the environment and a familiar face for the group and the players as well, so those three will assist me for the game tomorrow.”

The Reds currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, level on points with Chelsea, and only three points off Liverpool in fourth.

United to change system?

During his time as the United head coach, Amorim was often scrutinised for the way in which he set his side up, with many not being too fond of his 3-4-2-1 system.

This system often struggled to bring out the best in United’s stars, with captain Bruno Fernandes being forced into a much deeper role than he has been used to.

Not only Fernandes, but youngster Kobbie Mainoo also struggled under Amorim, as the talented midfielder has so far been unable to start any of his side’s league fixtures this season.

Maybe now that Fletcher has taken over, United will transition back to a traditional four-defender format, which my be much appreciated by fans of the Red Devils.
