Manchester United are reportedly ‘keen’ to beat their big-six rivals to the signing of a £35million defensive talent, who has been dubbed as the ‘new William Saliba’
Manchester United are reportedly looking to strengthen their defence as they set their sights on one of Europe’s hottest defensive prospects.
Ruben Amorim’s side have improved compared to last season, with them being far better in front of goal; however, there are still a fair few concerns regarding their leaky backline.
In the Premier League, following their disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to ten-man Everton, the Reds have conceded 19 as well as scoring 19, leaving them tenth in the table.
With Harry Maguire potentially leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season, the Reds will be looking to recruit a replacement for the Englishman.
United ‘keen’ on Jacquet
According to The Daily Briefing, via Stretty News, United are eyeing a move for 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet as their long-term heir to Maguire.
The France U21 star, currently playing for Rennes, has been on the radar of many top sides over the past couple of seasons and has now attracted the interest of United, who are ‘particularly keen’.
The Red Devils are facing competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Crystal Palace for the youngster, who is being likened to William Saliba.
The fee being reported for Jacquet should not exceed £35million, as the source believes, which will be a figure well within reason for the Reds.
United’s defensive prospects
It could be out with the old and in with the new if the Reds are to acquire the young Frenchman as a long-term Maguire replacement, which will help United to build a young defensive core.
Over the past couple of seasons, the Reds have brought in several new faces to improve their central defensive department, including 20-year-old Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven.
Added to these young talents are the more experienced stars, Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, who are both entering the prime years of their career.
The future could be very promising from a defensive perspective for Amorim’s side, as with the potential addition of Jacquet, he will have a plethora of talented options for his side’s core.
