Raphaël Varane was substituted at half-time with Manchester United 2-1 down against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Manchester United‘s Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest got itself off to an astounding start, with Erik ten Hag’s Reds finding themselves 2-0 down within five minutes of kick-off.

Christian Eriksen grabbed one back for the Devils on 17 minutes, with United dominating proceedings for the remainder of the first half – and at half-time, many were surprised to see that Raphaël Varane was substituted in favour of Victor Lindelöf for the second half.

The fixture ultimately saw United fight back to win the tie, with a fantastic second-half display from Bruno Fernandes, who notched a goal and assist, dragging United out of the mud and towards three points.

Speaking after the fixture, Ten Hag confirmed that Varane came off the pitch with “some complaints” at half-time, but cannot confirm whether it is a serious injury or not.

“He had some complaints,” Ten Hag said. “We didn’t want to risk him. I don’t know if it is bad. We have to wait.”

United’s next game is against Arsenal, with the fixture set to kick off on the afternoon of Sunday 3 September. United are already missing key figures such as Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and Tyrell Malacia ahead of the tie.

Lindelöf has played as a substitute for both Lisandro Martínez and Varane already this season, and will no doubt be ready should he be called upon for the trip to North London.
