Manchester United could be in line for an unexpected transfer boost as Rúben Amorim searches for funding to sign Carlos Baleba.
Manchester United are moving on to their final two signings of the summer as Rúben Amorim continues to improve his current squad.
So far across the 2025 transfer window, United have secured four signings, with Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, and Bryan Mbeumo being joined by a fresh striker signing, Benjamin Šeško.
United have spent around £214 million on the four transfers, with all but Leon’s signing costing the club upward of £60 million; however, the club have not stopped there.
Amorim is still hoping that this club will secure a new midfielder and goalkeeper in the coming weeks, but United need to secure funding from sales before they can commit to further signings.
United in line for Antony transfer boost
One player the club are hoping to sell in the coming weeks is Antony. After signing for £85 million from Ajax in 2022, the Brazilian failed to settle at Old Trafford, but a six-month loan at Real Betis for the second half of last season has raised his stock.
According to reports, Antony has rejected multiple offers from other clubs because he is set on re-signing for Betis this summer, but as of yet, the La Liga side have not been able to strike a deal.
There have been rumours that Betis are hoping that if they drag negotiations into the final days of the window, they can persuade United into accepting a loan move rather than a permanent transfer. But, after their latest injury issue, they may have to reconsider.
Star man Isco has been hit with a three-month injury during a 3-1 friendly loss against Malaga. As pointed out by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, this may well change the club’s transfer strategy.
United want at least £35 million for Antony this summer to avoid his sale being recorded as a financial loss on their books, and with Betis now in desperate need of a new attacking player, they could return to the negotiation table with the Old Trafford club.
Amorim is in need of funds for Baleba
United’s pre-season fixtures have shown that, while the team looks like a much more cohesive unit, there is still a dire need for a new defensive midfielder, and reports suggest that Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is their top target.
However, with Brighton demanding at least £100 million for the stunning 21-year-old this summer, Amorim’s side will need to raise significant funding to make the transfer a remote possibility.
If Betis were to secure Antony for £30-35 million, this would go a long way for the club. United are also hoping to secure as much as £90 million for Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho.
However, the former looks to be closing in on a season-long loan to AC Milan for a £4 million fee, with the Serie A side retaining the option to sign him for £39 million next summer.
United also want a new goalkeeper and are scheduled to hold talks with the representatives of Gianluigi Donnarumma in the next few days. The Italian international is available this summer for around £26 million after being cast out of Paris Saint-Germain’s starting XI.
