Manchester United identify £87m-rated Antoine Semenyo alternative following Chelsea interest

Manchester United have identified an alternative to Antoine Semenyo ahead of the January transfer window, following Chelsea’s bombshell interest in the Ghanaian.

Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat on Sunday to Aston Villa has left them seventh in the Premier League, and they are set to face a tough test over the next few weeks, with several key Reds out of action.

Ruben Amorim’s side have been in fine form in front of goal, currently sitting second for most goals scored across the entire league, only behind Manchester City.

Unfortunately for the Reds, they are set to be without their two top goal-scorers, Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes, for many weeks, as well as Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui.

With this being said, Amorim’s side could be set to strengthen their attack in the January transfer window, with an £87million-rated teenager being targeted.

United’s Semenyo alternative

Since it was revealed that Antoine Semenyo had a £65 million release clause in his contract, the Cherries’ talisman has been linked to a host of top sides across England.

United were one of the favourites for the Ghanaian’s signature, although a recent report from David Ornstein has stated that Chelsea have entered the race, and have spoken to Semenyo’s camp about a transfer.

TalkSPORT are now reporting that the Reds may have found themselves a highly-rated alternative in Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, who has become one of Europe’s most sought-after talents.

The Ivorian has impressed in his debut season in Germany, scoring six and assisting two in the Bundesliga, which has earned him an £87million price tag only four months into his Leipzig career.

United’s budget being wasted?

Semenyo looks to be a fantastic market opportunity for any top side in English football, although it could be questioned whether it is one that United really need.

The Reds acquired both Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo in the summer transfer window, who have both enjoyed their starts to life at Old Trafford, with nine goals and two assists between them.

United’s defensive frailties have been clear for all to see in recent weeks, with them looking especially weak when defending in transition. It could be argued that this is a more urgent issue to address.

If Amorim is to miss out on the signature of Semenyo, then it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Red Devils turn their attention to either a defensive signing or a midfielder when the January window opens.
