Manchester United hoping rivals secure £60m deal, it gives them clear path to sign “perfect” star instead

Manchester United will be hoping that one of their Premier League rivals can secure a £60 million deal that gives them a clear path to signing a “perfect” player for Rúben Amorim.

Manchester United are looking to bolster their attack this summer following a disappointing 2024/25 season, which ended with a 15th-place finish in the Premier League and a Europa League final defeat.

Goalscoring proved to be a major issue, with Bruno Fernandes leading the charts on 19 goals, while Amad and Alejandro Garnacho both finished with 11. No player managed to hit the 20-goal mark.

In response, United are turning to the transfer market. Matheus Cunha is set to arrive in a £62.5 million deal from Wolves, and Bryan Mbeumo has given the go-ahead for a potential move from Brentford.

Rúben Amorim’s side remain in the hunt for further attacking options, but one target is no longer available as Liam Delap has officially signed for Chelsea.

United hoping to secure striker transfer

With Cunha through the gates at Carrington and the club optimistic that Mbeumo will soon follow, the club will focus on sales to raise further cash for Amorim’s summer window spending.

However, reports from earlier this week have claimed that, despite United also wanting a midfielder this summer, the club have decided that their subsequent signing after the aforementioned duo will be a striker.

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres is on United’s shortlist, with Amorim reportedly a “big admirer”, but he’s just one of several forwards the club are looking at.

United haven’t made any formal contact with Sporting. Reports in Portugal suggest the 26-year-old would rather join a Champions League side, but it has also been widely suggested that competing in Europe next season is not a dealbreaker for Gyökeres.

Arsenal’s Šeško deal hands United major Gyökeres boost

United are not the only club who are looking to sign a new striker this summer, with Premier League rivals Arsenal also looking to snap up a new goalscorer amid injuries to Kai Havertz and the waning form of Gabriel Jesus.

As per The Mirror, the North London outfit have been in talks with RB Leipzig for 22-year-old £60 million-rated striker Benjamin Šeško. However, talkSPORT have stated that Mikel Arteta’s side still hold a strong interest in Gyökeres.

However, should Arsenal’s move for Šeško go through, with Leipzig ready to sell their current No. 30, this would help clear a path for United to secure Gyökeres, with Arsenal only set to try and sign the Swede if talks for Šeško fall through.

The Swedish international has been touted as a “perfect” signing for Amorim, considering that he scored 66 goals in 68 games while the pair worked together at Sporting.

It was reported earlier this week that United’s latest financial results have given the club confidence that they will be able to take a step forward and sign the 26-year-old striker this summer.
