Manchester United have held “positive” talks with Juventus regarding the potential purchase of Jadon Sancho, with Rúben Amorim now needing to make a big call.
Whilst Manchester United have been active with their transfer incoming this summer, few departures are yet to come to fruition. Ruben Amorim is looking to unload players he does not believe have a future at the club to rebuild the team to better suit his style of play.
Matheus Cunha has joined United from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the club are currently pushing to conclude a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo. Additionally, Diego Leon is set to arrive at the club ahead of the pre-season tour following the club’s purchase of him in January.
So far, only players whose contracts have expired have left the club. Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen have left as free agents and are available to be picked up by other clubs, and Jonny Evans has retired from playing football and has taken up a role in United’s Academy.
However, a new report has indicated that there are positive talks regarding one of United’s players leaving the club permanently this summer.
Juventus in “positive” talks for Sancho
Dharmesh Sheth from Sky Sports has reported that there have been “positive” talks between Manchester United and Juventus over a potential move for Jadon Sancho.
Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea, who had the option to sign the England international for £25 million. Despite recording 13 goal involvements, Chelsea opted to pay a £5 million fee to avoid signing Sancho on a permanent basis.
United are aiming to agree a permanent transfer for Sancho for a figure close to the £25 million they would have received from Chelsea. However, due to Sancho’s substantial wages, Sheth has said that a loan move can not be ruled out.
Further, reports elsewhere have stated that Juventus have offered United the choice of one of Douglas Luiz, Dusan Vlahovic, and Tim Weah as part of a potential swap deal. Amorim has a big decision to make – does he accept one of this trio or push for United to secure £25 million in cash?
Sancho’s contract is set to run out at the end of next season, meaning that if a permanent deal is not agreed this summer, he could potentially leave for free, with United unable to recoup any of the £73 million they paid for him in 2021.
A silver lining to a poor transfer
Jadon Sancho’s time at United has undoubtedly been disappointing, but the securing of a permanent transfer could avoid it becoming a disastrous deal for United. On the field, Sancho has failed to impress, and off the field, his antics have left a poor taste in many fans’ mouths.
When Chelsea paid £5 million not to sign Sancho, it looked like it was going to be an impossible task for the club to move him on, as Chelsea are known for their frivolous spending. However, if United can agree on a fee of £25 million for Sancho, then they’ll have ended up making more money than if he had gone straight to Chelsea.

With the £5 million from Chelsea and the potential £25 million from Juventus, the club would have made £30 million of the £73 million transfer back.
In this case, Sancho would be one of the 10 most expensive departures in United’s history, and the transfer won’t appear as calamitous as if he were to leave on a free next summer.
If an agreement can be reached among all three parties, then there could still be a positive outcome for Sancho’s time at United. The club would walk away with £5 million more than if he had gone straight to Chelsea at a time when money is of particular importance for United.
