Manchester United have been scouting one of Spain’s hottest midfield prospects in recent weeks, which could ‘pave the way’ for a swap deal.
Manchester United’s transfer plans are already underway for this summer, with it being widely reported that a massive overhaul is in store for Ruben Amorim’s squad.
The Red Devils have had a season to forget, with them currently sitting 15th in the Premier League, scoring a record low of 38 goals in 33 games.
There aren’t many areas of the United squad that will be safe from potential upgrades this summer, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team aspire to fully support Amorim’s 3-4-3 system in a hope to change their fortunes for next season.
This being said, it has been reported that United have been scouting one La Liga star in recent weeks, which could allow for one of the out-of-favour attackers to head in the other direction.
United scouting Cardoso of Betis
According to reports from SamC on X, United have recently been scouting Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso.
The 23-year-old United States international has featured in 25 league games for Betis this season, scoring three goals and one assist along the way. He has also featured in ten UEFA Conference League matches too, scoring one goal.
Cardoso has been previously linked with a move to England, with an offer of around £20 million being put in for him by Wolves in January, however, this offer was rejected as Betis weren’t interested in selling at the time.
United’s scouts may have their attention turned towards the Conference League semi-final on Thursday, where Cardoso’s Betis will face off with Fiorentina in the bid for a spot in the final.
Could Cardoso interest help Antony exit?
If United are to remain interested in Cardoso this summer, then it could potentially allow for Antony to head in the other direction.
The aforementioned report stated: “Real Betis currently have Antony on loan from United, and while no formal approach has been made yet, it remains to be seen whether any potential interest in Cardoso could pave the way for a swap deal involving the Brazilian winger.”

With Antony enjoying some of his best football out in Spain at the moment, a permanent transfer away from Manchester looks likely for the Brazilian and a move involving Cardoso could potentially make this transfer easier.
Antony is considered surpless to requirements at Old Trafford while the Reds will need midfield reinforcements with Christian Eriksen likely to leave the club, and Cardoso could be the perfect replacement for the Dane.
