Manchester United have already identified their top target for the January transfer window after making a key transfer mistake this summer.
As the first international break of the Premier League season comes to an end, Manchester United are readying themselves for a trip to local rivals Manchester City.
Ruben Amorim’s side currently sit ninth in the table, having lost, drawn and won in their first three matches against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley.
The Reds acquired Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to resolve their attacking issues, whilst Senne Lammens was brought in to strengthen the goalkeeping department.
Despite heavily strengthening two problematic areas of the United squad, it is still believed that the Reds missed a trick by not acquiring a new midfielder. Their top January target aims to resolve this conundrum.
United’s top January target
The Manchester United midfield has been a key talking point during the first few fixtures of the season, with nobody really knowing what United’s best option is.
As reported by Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, the Red Devils are ‘desperate’ to sign a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window.
Amorim aims to enhance the quality of the middle of the park for his squad, a task he was unable to accomplish during the summer period.
United are said to be looking for a ‘powerful and athletic player’ to give their midfield a ‘new lease of life’.
United to look elsewhere from Baleba in January
During the latter stages of the transfer window, the Reds were heavily linked to Brighton’s Carlos Baleba due to his impressive two seasons with the Seagulls.
The fee demanded for the 21-year-old was deemed too high, ruling out any possibility of Baleba joining United, at least for the January window.
Brighton are likely to demand over £100 million for their Cameroonian midfielder, which would leave the Reds to look elsewhere to fill their defensive midfield void.
It is still unclear as to who Amorim’s side will target in the January window, but hopefully, this will become clearer in the coming months.
