Manchester United have reportedly learned what it could cost to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig this summer.
Michael Carrick’s Manchester United made no transfer moves in the January transfer window apart from sealing and sorting loan moves for academy stars. Harry Amass has returned to the championship with Norwich, along with Toby Collyer, who joined Hull.
United are expected to make huge transfer investments in the summer, however. With Carrick expected to leave the club at the end of the season due to his interim position, United are expected to have to back a new system.
Backing a manager’s tactical setup in the summer will be vital to United’s success next season, which could see Champions League football and require a larger squad for rotation. A decision over Carrick’s future is yet to be made.
United are rumoured to be targeting a defensive midfielder with Premier League experience. Players linked with United include Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
United ‘are interested’ in Diomande transfer
Yan Diomande is an Ivorian international who plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. The winger has picked up eight goals and five assists in his first season at the club in just 23 games. An impressive stat for the 19-year-old.
German football expert Christian Falk confirmed via his CF Bayern Insider Column that Manchester United are amongst clubs interested in signing the young star and will likely look to do so in the summer, with many clubs fighting for his name.
Falk reported that Diomande has an £87 million price tag, which will likely push away clubs interested in the signing, such as Bayern Munich, who look to be turning away despite interest.
There is interest from other Premier League clubs, according to Falk, who says, “Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool are all interested and can afford him.”
United’s transfer strategy of offloading players to free up budget space has allowed them to look toward signing the winger in the summer.
Should United take the risk of signing expensive young talent?
With Diomande at such a young age, he may lack the experience needed to play in the Premier League for the biggest side. We have seen this before when stars such as Jadon Sancho come to the club with a large price tag, and things don’t work out as expected.
With the Premier League being a far more competitive and physical battle than the Bundesliga, playing on the stage can be difficult for players to adapt to at such a young age. United have targeted Premier League proven players such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to avoid this issue.

It seems that experience could be a reason why Bayern aren’t fully committed to the signing of Diomande. Falk says “Bayern fans, as I’d love to see him in Munich – he needs time to develop. He’s clearly got a lot of potential, as was clear even in this one match. But it’s just not enough to go on to commit to such a huge fee at this point in time.”
On the other hand, Benjamin Šeško has had a positive start to his United career, quickly becoming a fan favourite after joining from RB Leipzig in the summer. Erling Haaland has also been an incredible success for Manchester City since leaving Borussia Dortmund at 21.
Diomande’s story is yet to be told, and one can hope that if United pursue him with a high price tag, he will have a successful future at the club.
