Manchester United have been handed a possible boost regarding their Rúben Amorim succession plan amid intense speculation surrounding Oliver Glasner.
Rúben Amorim’s future at Manchester United looks increasingly in doubt as the club continue to fall short of consistent results.
In the Premier League, United sit 14th in the table, having won two games, drawn one, and lost three, already falling well behind the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
A recent 3-1 loss to Brentford, despite a whole week of positive training, has been a particular sting in United’s side, with the Bees thoroughly outplaying Amorim and going 2-0 up within 20 minutes of play.
At the same time, with no European football on the cards this season, United also crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round of the competition, losing to League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties after a disastrous 2-2 draw last month.
Glasner likely to be available next summer
With Amorim’s future at significant risk, some reports have suggested that a succession plan is already being laid out at Old Trafford, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glanser one such name on the agenda.
According to BBC Sport, Glasner was offered a new contract at Selhurst Park earlier this summer, but he has yet to sign the deal, as he wanted to wait and see the club’s ambitions before committing to Palace.
However, amid a summer that saw them make a profit of £16.3 million, Glanser was evidently fuming as he openly criticised how his club operated during the window.
The BBC Sport report further claims that sources close to the South London club have now stated that the chances of Glanser staying beyond the end of his current contract, which expires in June 2026, are now “remote”, leaving United with a fantastic chance to sign the Austrian.
Carrick open to United return as interim boss
If Amorim were to be fired from his duties at Old Trafford before the end of the season and the club see Glanser as the ideal candidate to replace the Portuguese boss, there is a very real chance the shot-callers at United could hire an interim manager.
When Erik ten Hag was sacked last October, United told Amorim that they wanted him immediately rather than waiting until the summer, but the sudden change and pivot in style caused turbulence at the club.
This time around, INEOS may instead choose to wait until the summer to install a new head coach, and instead hire an interim boss to stabilise the ship and help the club climb the table, much like Ole Gunnar Solskjær did after Jose Mourinho was fired in 2018.
One possible candidate is former United midfielder Michael Carrick, who is reportedly very open to a return to the club. Carrick also took charge of three games after Solskjær was sacked in 2021.
