Manchester United handed clear route to sign Rúben Amorim’s ‘perfect’ wing-back despite competition

Manchester United handed a clear route to sign one of Inter Milan’s best stars as other rivals hover around.

With the January transfer window just under two weeks away, the rumour mill has already begun swirling with potential targets for Manchester United.

All season, links to Antoine Semenyo as well as multiple midfielders like Connor Gallagher, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba have been continuous.

With the likes of Noussair Mazaraoui, Amad and Bryan Mbeumo missing due to AFCON, United’s right-hand side has been handed a big blow.

Whether it is someone who can play in the forward areas, wing-back or full-back, should Ruben Amorim change system, Manchester United may have to be active for more than just a midfielder.

Inter Milan give their demands for Dumfries

Denzel Dumfries has been a player who has been linked to United for years, ever since his time at PSV Eindhoven. Since his move to Inter Milan, the defender has turned into one of the standout wing-backs in world football.

With Amorim’s current style of play having a lot of the play go through wing-backs, there are not many better at that role than the ‘perfect’ Dutchman.

Rudy Galetti from TeamTalk has reported that Manchester United are one of three Premier League clubs, alongside Aston Villa and Newcastle who have registered interest in the 29-year-old.

With a contract until June 2028, Inter have no pressure to sell, but they would reportedly ‘evaluate’ any offer they deem sizeable.

However, with the player currently out injured and not expected to return till spring, a transfer may not be realised till the summer. By this time Dumfries would have turned 30.

Do United need Dumfries?

On the surface, a deal for Dumfries would seem shrewd. He offers a heap of experience with a Serie A title and two Champions League final appearances to his name, as well as being one of the premier players in his position.

Not only would he be able challenge Amad for a spot at wing-back, should Amorim switch his system to a four-back, he would also easily step into the right-back role to challenge Diogo Dalot.

However, given his known injury problems and age, the ship may have sailed on this transfer. Inter are likely to demand a big fee for one of their best players, and he may ask for huge wages that, under INEOS, the club would be unwilling to pay.

The Red Devils could use the same money to invest in either a future player or other positions that need it, like midfield.

Furthermore, with the likes of Bendito Mantato rising through the ranks of the academy and being given an opportunity at wing-back, there are ways to fill that role while also looking to the future.
