Manchester United were embarrassed at Old Trafford by Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon as they lost 3-0 in an awful display.

The Reds started the game poorly, conceding the opening goal within five minutes of kick-off and then never recovered properly.

Shades of dominance in possession were always matched with a chance of Bournemouth countering in numbers, and there were never any concerns of a true threat against the visitor’s backline.

Anthony Martial started the game through the middle, with Rasmus Hojlund dropping to the bench, in an unpopular decision from Erik ten Hag.

The manager explained that Hojlund has played a lot of football so far this season and also mentioned Martial’s impressive display against Everton at Goodison Park late last month.

Ten Hag challenged the no.9 to perform like that on a consistent basis after also admitting that his display against Newcastle United last weekend was not good enough.

Martial failed that challenge in the eyes of the Old Trafford supporters, who were frustrated with his display against Bournemouth.

The Frenchman didn’t inspire and often hindered the team as he searched for space deeper or out wide, rather than doing the job of the striker.

Scott McTominay scored his opener against Chelsea on Wednesday after Hojlund pushed the centre-halves further back with a run.

When the 20-year-old ended up replacing Martial towards the start of the second half, Old Trafford applauded the move as soon as they saw Martial’s name on the board.

It’s a sad indictment of the Frenchman’s career at the club, but he was certainly not the only poor performer on the day.

“I think he has the abilities and the qualities,” said Ten Hag of the forward following the defeat. “After this performance, it’s not fair to talk about just one player. We need to improve as a group.”
