Manchester United set to face tough competition from two other clubs in their pursuit for one of Europe’s most sought after shot-stoppers.
With Manchester United’s signing of Andre Onana not going the way that many hoped it would, this summer poses the opportunity for Ruben Amorim’s side to upgrade their goalkeeping department.
Neither of Onana or Altar Bayindir filled the United fans with much confidence last season, which caused the number one spot to become a serious area of concern.
United conceded a disappointing 54 goals in the Premier League last season, with Onana often being embroiled in controversy due to his frequent blunders.
It’ll be important that United right their wrongs this summer on all fronts, with a new goalkeeper seemingly being one of the next steps once they have solved their attacking dilemma.
PSG ‘make inroads’ on United target
In the Red Devil’s pursuit of a new shot-stopper, they have turned their attention towards Lille goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, however, they face tough competition.
According to Le Parisien, United face competition from local rivals Manchester City, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, with the French giants being Chevalier’s favoured location.
The report states that PSG have advanced their efforts to sign Chevalier, who has made a move to the Parc des Princes a priority. This comes due to contract negotiations with Gianluigi Donnarumma hitting a wall, as per Get French Football News, leaving PSG to seek an alternative.
This being said, the same report by Le Parisien also states that both the Manchester clubs are also interested in Donnarumma’s situation, which could be an interesting story to follow.
United’s goalkeeping dilemma
Due to the fact that United missed out on European football, not only attracting targets but affording them has now become more of an issue.
If United were to make a move for Chevalier, it is expected that Lille could set a price-tag as high as £59 million.
This would surely be too much for Amorim’s side whose budget seems to have been predominantly saved for the attacking department.
It will be interesting to see what direction Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team take this summer regarding the goalkeeping position, with rumours of a new shot-stopper being few and far between at the moment.
