Manchester United face Sandro Tonali competiton as Premier League rivals and European giants join the race

Manchester United are expected to face strong competition for Sandro Tonali this summer, as they look to complete their midfield rebuild.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is on Manchester United’s radar as the club looks to sign a replacement for the outgoing Casemiro this summer.

Newcastle reportedly want a fee in the region of £100 million to part ways with Tonali. Various reports claim that Tonali’s preference, if he were to leave Newcastle, would be to return to Italy, but it is unclear if any Serie A side would have the financial capacity to meet Newcastle’s demands.

Arsenal were linked to Tonali on deadline day in January, with various reports claiming that his agent had offered him to the Gunners, but that move did not come to fruition.

The midfield will be United’s priority this summer, with two new signings likely in that position. In addition to Tonali, United have also been linked to the likes of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Felix Nmecha.

Real Madrid scouting Tonali

In addition to Manchester United and potentially Arsenal, Real Madrid can now also be added to the list of clubs monitoring Tonali’s situation at Newcastle.

According to The Sun, Real Madrid are ready to join the race for Tonali. Staff of the Spanish club were at St. James’ Park on Saturday night to watch Newcastle take on Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Madrid wanted to gather information on Manchester City ahead of their Champions League round of 16 clash, but were also there to scout Tonali as they line up a potential move for the former AC Milan midfielder.

After losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer, The Sun reports that the Magpies are determined not to lose another star. However, Tonali is yet to communicate with the club if he wants to stay next season, amidst interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

United need to go all out for Anderson

Sandro Tonali is an outstanding player who has qualities United will need to add to the squad with Casemiro set to leave, but Elliot Anderson is the best option on the market, and United need to go all out for him.

While it will not be a straightforward deal due to competition from Manchester City and Nottingham Forest likely to demand a significant fee, United need to do everything possible to get that deal over the line.

Anderson offers exceptional qualities, both on and off the ball. He is combative, strong in duels, both on the ground and in the air. On the ball, he is comfortable under pressure and has an impressive passing range.

That being said, Tonali would be a very good alternative option and would definitely raise United’s physical and technical floor. United will likely sign two midfielders, especially if Manuel Ugarte also leaves, but their price tags mean signing both Anderson and Tonali will likely be financially unfeasible.

Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund could potentially be a more cost-friendly second midfield signing in addition to either Anderson or Tonali. The German midfielder possesses immense quality and would significantly strengthen the squad.
