Having signed a new frontline, Manchester United are not finished yet in terms of summer signings, and have now switched their focus to midfield depth.
Manchester United have already secured four new arrivals this summer as Ruben Amorim sets about rebuilding a squad that slumped to 15th in the Premier League last season.
With last year’s tally of just 44 goals in need of urgent improvement, United overhauled their forward line, opening the window with the signing of Matheus Cunha, before finally landing Bryan Mbeumo after drawn-out negotiations with Brentford.
Teenage left-back Diego Leon, signed in January, also joined up with the squad and impressed during pre-season, while the club made a major statement by completing the marquee signing of Benjamin Šeško.
Those moves have taken United’s summer spending to roughly £214 million. With the attack now rebuilt, the club have shifted their attention to strengthening midfield and potentially signing a new goalkeeper.
United preparing move for Baleba alternative
Having been identified as the primary midfield target for Amorim’s side, Carlos Baleba’s £115 million price tag has now made a deal almost impossible this summer, with United now concentrating on securing the player in 2026.
Despite being their main target, missing out on the Cameroonian this month may not be the end of the world, as United explore moves for other potential midfielders.
One of the players rumoured to be high on United’s list is French midfielder Lucien Agoumé, who, according to a post on X by InfoSevillismo, is being mentioned in connection with United.
The 23-year-old Sevilla midfielder is considered a cheaper alternative this summer, with hopes that United can nurture the potential of the promising French talent. His price tag of around £16-20 million has been touted as “insane” value for money.
Agoumé could prove to be a shrewd bit of business
Amorim reportedly wants an athletic midfielder, and Agoumé could be the answer to that. The 22-year-old made 2.9 tackles per 90 and 1.8 interceptions per 90, with the latter ranking him in the top 2% of La Liga players, giving United the perfect box-to-box option.
Agoumé thrived in a Sevilla side that narrowly avoided the drop from the league, maintaining a passing accuracy of 83%, and ranked in the top 79th percentile for progressive passes.
With their lack of European football, Sevilla have gone through some financial issues, and the club may be forced to sell one of their most valuable assets, with a £20 million fee being touted.
Signing such a promising talent for the reported price would be an astute bit of business for a club that, in recent history, has massively overpaid for players.
