Manchester United eyeing £20m midfield bargain as transfer alternative to expensive Serie A target

Manchester United are considering a £20 million South American midfielder as a budget-friendly alternative to Atalanta’s costly Ederson amid midfield overhaul plans.

Manchester United face a summer midfield revamp as Christian Eriksen departs, Casemiro ages, and Manuel Ugarte continuously struggles with discipline under Rúben Amorim.

Ederson of Atalanta remains their preferred signing but comes with a hefty £50 million price tag, which may be a stretch given United’s uncertain finances and the confirmed absence from Champions League football.

In light of this, United have turned their attention to Palmeiras’ Richard Rios. Although his release clause is set at £85 million, a report from GiveMeSport suggests the Brazilian club is willing to negotiate a deal closer to £20 million. This presents a rare bargain for a player with strong credentials, including two Brazilian Serie A titles.

Rios has been monitored by United for some time, with initial interest reported as early as August 2024 when his value was estimated at around £12 million.

His recent form has pushed that figure up, but also highlighted his potential contribution, boasting two league assists and two goals in four Copa Libertadores appearances this season.

Rios under United’s radar for quite some time

The decision on whether to prioritise Rios or continue chasing Ederson will be made soon by Manchester United’s recruitment team. They must weigh the financial risks of a big investment against the opportunity to secure a promising midfielder for a fraction of the expected cost.

Palmeiras appear open to negotiations, which may give United leverage to finalise a deal quickly, especially now that Champions League football has slipped. The club’s financial situation and transfer strategy will play a crucial role in determining how much they are willing to spend.

United’s scouting department is expected to submit a detailed report on Rios’ fit for the team, including his tactical adaptability and potential impact in the Premier League. His experience winning the Brazilian league twice is a positive indicator of his winning mentality.

Meanwhile, the club continues to monitor Ederson’s situation at Atalanta, but the escalating price tag and economic uncertainties mean that Rios could be the more practical and immediate solution to United’s midfield needs. The upcoming weeks will be decisive for the direction of their summer transfer plans.

United’s transfer strategy ahead of summer transfer window

Following Manchester United’s loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final, signing Ipswich striker Liam Delap now seems unlikely. Without the draw of European football, it is uncertain whether he would want to join the club.

This defeat could affect the club’s ability to attract top talent, making this summer’s recruitment more difficult. Missing out on Champions League football presents challenges for United’s future prospects.

Despite these setbacks, there are still potential positive developments. Fabrizio Romano has indicated that United may pursue two No.10s this summer, with Lyon’s Rayan Cherki as a primary target. His arrival could enhance the team’s creativity.

Additionally, United is set to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, which may strengthen their attacking options. As the club adapts to this situation, fans will be eager to see how management handles player acquisitions moving forward.
