A Manchester United star is seeking a move away from Old Trafford this January in the hopes of regular playing time for the remainder of the season. Interest from abroad is building.
With the January transfer window coming to an end in the next 48 hours, Manchester United seem unlikely to make any major changes to their squad.
January has been a busy month for the club, with the appointment of Michael Carrick dominating the headlines, but United look set to gamble with their hopes of Champions League qualification by ignoring a transfer window midway through the season.
During Ruben Amorim’s tenure, a collective of five outcasts was formed at the club, although of the five, one still remains without a new club.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia were infamously labelled the ‘bomb squad’ and were placed on the transfer list, which resulted in four of the members finding new clubs, whether it be permanently or temporarily.
European interest surrounds Malacia
Malacia was brought to Manchester by Erik ten Hag as his first signing during his stint at the club. The Dutchman signed from Feyenoord in a deal worth £13 million in 2022 after rising through the ranks at the Dutch club. Now age 26, the left-back is likely to leave the club this month, with interest from abroad building.
According to Voetbal International, Malacia is seeking solutions immediately and has interest from a range of unnamed clubs in Italy, Turkey and the MLS, with a concrete approach from an American team having been made. The report states that a deal is ‘likely to happen in the final days of the transfer window’.
The transfer window in the United States is open until March 26, so if Malacia is unable to find a suitor in the coming days, then he may still have some potential options from the MLS to choose from.
With Malacia’s contract set to expire in the summer, it looks unlikely that the Reds will recuperate any sort of transfer fee for the Dutchman; however, this shouldn’t stop any potential negotiations.
Malacia’s injury-plagued United stint
After a mostly positive debut season in red, Malacia’s United career seemed to fade. An important part of Ten Hag’s squad, the Dutchman started for the first time in his side’s memorable 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, and was quickly adopted by the United faithful.
During the following summer, Malacia underwent knee surgery and was then out for over 18 months recovering. He spent time with the U21’s during his rehabilitation and returned to first-team action under Amorim in November 2024.

Last February, the 26-year-old joined PSV on a loan deal and spent the second half of the season in his home nation. He featured just eight times for the Dutch champions and returned to his parent club in the summer, when he was made available for transfer.
Malacia’s time at United has been frustrating due to his unfortunate injury record, but hopefully, a fresh start in a new setting will be exactly what the left-back needs to get his career back on track.
