Manchester United coach has already explained Chido Obi’s current situation amid ridiculous claims from Denmark

Manchester United’s Under-21 coach has already explained Chido Obi’s current situation amid ridiculous claims from Denmark that the youngster should assess his options.

During the summer transfer window, Manchester United spent north of £200million as they attempt to climb from their previous Premier League finish of 15th.

Ruben Amorim’s side prioritised the attacking department in the summer, bringing in the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško to replace United’s want-away forwards.

Due to this influx of attacking quality, the Red Devils have now got a substantial amount of depth across their forward line, which has meant Chido Obi has moved back to the Under-21s.

Obi featured for the Reds on several occasions last season due to a lack of quality at the top end of the pitch, but has been featuring solely for the 21’s so far this campaign.

Bizarre Obi claims emerge

Former Denmark international Mikkel Beckmann has said, via Sport Witness, that the youngster shouldn’t have to be settling for youth minutes, despite only being 17 years old, and should consider a United exit.

“The reserve team matches… it doesn’t taste particularly good. It’s like when we have our Future Cup matches at home. It’s the reserves who play, and it’s just far from the same as playing first-team football,” he said.

“I just don’t think the time is right for Amorim to suddenly try Chido Obi out at United. He is very, very far from the first team at United.

“I would like to see him play some senior football at a higher level than just reserves at United.”

United coach explains Obi situation

When talking about Obi’s development, United coach Travis Binnion told Manchester Evening News that, “It’s not easy for him because people look at him like he’s a big kid. The key thing there is he’s still very young, he’s still learning his game.

“Because he’s had exposure with the first-team, I think people expect performance levels that are really consistent and really high. You’ve got first-team players across the country who don’t do that.

“The expectation on him is high, but he has to deliver the basics, and what he did from minute 30 to 80 when he came off is he pressed, he ran and he occupied two centre halves to give other players space on the pitch to exploit, which is why we dominated the ball.

“I’m really pleased with him and we haven’t even scraped the top of the iceberg with him. He’s got loads to come.

“That will come from how he sees the game, keeps working hard and recognises he has stuff to develop because that’s always a challenge when you have that first-team exposure and then you go away and have to start working on things.”

Clearly, the media panic from Obi’s fellow Dane is nonsensical as only very rarely will 17-year-old’s be imbedded into a first team. There will surely be exciting times ahead for Obi in a United shirt.
