Manchester United clarify Bruno Fernandes’ captaincy position after Liverpool loss
Erik ten Hag has clarified Manchester United’s position regarding the captaincy of Bruno Fernandes after the player was criticised for his behaviour during last weekend’s loss to Liverpool.
With the common absence of Harry Maguire in Manchester United‘s starting line-up, Erik ten Hag has elected Bruno Fernandes as his on-field captain. The midfielder has generally filled the role well but came under criticism during the 7-0 loss to Liverpool.
Fernandes has been a standout player for Manchester United this season. The Portuguese attacking midfielder has been a driving force behind United’s success so far, providing crucial goals and assists in the Premier League, Europa League, and the domestic cup competitions.
With his technical abilities, creative passing, and clinical finishing, Fernandes has become one of the most feared attacking players in the league.
Off the pitch, Fernandes has generally been a leader for the club. His vocal presence and positive attitude have helped to inspire his teammates and create a winning mentality within the squad. He has also shown a great commitment to the club, often going above and beyond to help his team win matches.
Overall, Bruno Fernandes has been one of the standout players of the season so far, and Manchester United will be hoping he can maintain his form as they compete for silverware in the coming months.
Despite some claiming that Fernandes should have the captaincy stripped of him after the Liverpool loss, Erik ten Hag has backed one of his most important players, citing his brilliant season and importance to the squad.
“He’s playing a brilliant season, he’s had a really important role in why we’re in the position where we are, because he’s giving energy to the team, not only running a lot and at the highest intensity but the right way and right direction,” Ten Hag said on Wednesday.
“He’s pointing and coaching players, he’s an inspiration for the whole team, but no one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, we have to learn, I have to learn.”
He also went one step further, clarifying that Fernandes will stay as Manchester United captain when Harry Maguire is not playing.
“He has to learn, he will because he’s intelligent, I’m happy to have Bruno Fernandes in my team and that he’s captain when Harry isn’t on the pitch.”

Fernandes is expected to stay in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI as Manchester United face Real Betis in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
after defeating Barcelona in the previous round of the competition, United will be entering the round of 16 confident they will be able to eventually get their hands on the trophy should they continue to take the competition game by game just like Erik ten Hag has previously mentioned.
