Manchester United chiefs deliver clear hint at Ruben Amorim’s first signing amid double loan exit

Ruben Amorim is struggling to implement his system at Manchester United with limited options for the wingback positions.
Manchester United lost 3-1 against Brighton on the weekend and it was another deserved loss for Ruben Amorim’s side this season.
The United boss is finding it difficult at Old Trafford with limited time on the training field and less-than-ideal players for his system.
His 3-4-3 formation puts a lot of importance on the wingbacks, and currently the Reds do not have the best options for those roles.
United planning Antony and Malacia double loan exit
Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are the two starting options right now, while Amad can also play there but currently seems to be preferred in the frontline.
Luke Shaw is currently injured and also is more likely to play as a left centre-back if he returns to the squad. That leave Antony and Tyrell Malacia as the two backup options for the wingback positions.
They have only started together as the wingbacks once so far under Amorim, in the 3-2 win over Bodø/Glimt in November, and it appears likely both players will be leaving this month.
Multiple reporters, including Fabrizio Romano, have claimed that Antony is one step away from a loan departure to La Liga side Real Betis.
Meanwhile, Malacia has reportedly agreed to leave Old Trafford on loan too, with his destination likely to be to Italy.
United chiefs hinting at wingback signing
While neither of those players have played much under Amorim so far, they are quite literally the only backup options at wingback.
United chiefs being open to allowing them both to leave surely sends a big hint that their next move is to bring at least one wingback signing into the club in January.
That addition was needed anyway, but it will be an even bigger necessity should Antony and Malacia depart, otherwise there will be major issues with just two, or maybe three, players able to play in the most important position for Amorim’s system.

The head coach has already suggested that he needs a new player in that position to help the team become more comfortable in his way of playing.
“We need training, I don’t know how long it will take [for players to get used to the system],” he said. “The profiles sometimes you can understand it’s not the right ones…”
