Manchester United CEO releases statement after calls for Erik ten Hag sack
Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has released a statement amid calls for Erik ten Hag to be sacked from the hot-seat at Old Trafford.
The Reds have experienced a mixed start to the new campaign, managing only one Premier League win in their first three games.
A humiliating 3-0 loss to rivals Liverpool followed a last-minute blow from Brighton last weekend.
While their opening week victory against Fulham showed some promise, Erik ten Hag’s side still has a lot of work to do.
This mixed start to the campaign, mixed with the difficulties from most of last season, has already led to some fans and pundits calling for the manager to be sacked.
However, the club’s new CEO, Omar Berrada, reaffirmed his support for the manager in a press conference. Although this was held three hours before the Liverpool game.
“Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely,” Berrada told the reporters. “We think Erik is the right coach for us, and we’re fully backing him.
“We’re very happy with that decision [to extend his contract]. Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together in this transfer window.
“We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.”
Question marks have arisen over the style of play that the Dutchman is trying to get his team to play and fans are not sure whether United can take the leap forward to becoming a title-challenging team under him despite success in the cup competitions.
When asked how long it would take United to start challenging for the major trophies, such as the Premier League and Champions League, Berrada added: “I think anybody who has worked in football for a long time could tell you that it’s almost impossible to put a timescale to answer that question.
“[But] when you look at the teams who have been successful consistently for many years it’s because they have the right coach, they have signed the right players, they have the right structure around the coach and players; you need to take good decisions consistently for many years to get into a position where you are a financially sustainable club that is competing to win every single competition.
“We don’t want to just win one Premier League and then be satisfied. We want to create a team that is capable of competing for the Champions League, for the Premier League and for the domestic cups on a consistent basis.”
