André Onana has struggled during his time at Manchester United and could already be set to be replaced just two years into his stint at Old Trafford.
Since joining Manchester United in 2023, André Onana has struggled to instil confidence in the team, and after just two seasons, his future at Old Trafford already appears uncertain.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper’s most recent appearance for United came in their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, which was his third loss in a European final.
After finishing the Premier League season in a disappointing 15th place, significant changes are underway under manager Ruben Amorim, with the goalkeeper position seemingly high on the list of concerns.
With several keepers linked to the club this summer, the club have reportedly set their sights on signing a two-time Yashin Trophy winner as they look to solidify their No. 1 position going into next season.
United eager to get “world-class” deal over the line
Emi Martinez has emerged as a potential target in this summer’s transfer window, as Aston Villa need to sell players to comply with profit and sustainability rules after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
To sign the 32-year-old “world-class” keeper, however, United would also need to sell their current shot stopper, Onana, to finalise any deal. With previous links to Saudi Arabia, the Cameroonian is not without his suitors.
As reported by Football Insider, United have been in regular contact with the Argentine and are ringing his representatives “every day” to finalise any possible deal over the next couple of weeks.
United will face competition from Atletico Madrid. As also reported by Football Insider, Martinez is open to the move to Spain, as Jan Oblak is rumoured to be set for a move to Saudi Arabia.
Should United prioritise elsewhere?
Despite facing considerable criticism for his performances last season, Amorim will surely prioritise other positions as he looks to overhaul his squad.
United only scored a combined 44 Premier League goals, and with the club already signing Matheus Cunha, they still need more attacking reinforcements. Bryan Mbeumo has been heavily linked, but the negotiations have seemingly stalled in recent times.
United’s main priority this summer must be to sign an out-and-out No. 9 to join the club. Names like Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyökeres have been named as potential signings, and all would demand substantial fees.
With United’s tight budget this summer, they should prioritise transforming the front line and adding some depth in other positions before signing a keeper that could cost around £40 million.
