Manchester United blocked move for £35m striker ahead of joining surprise Premier League side

Manchester United saw a move for a £35million striker collapse ahead of his surprise move to a newly-promoted Premier League side on deadline day.

During the summer, Manchester United strengthened their attack heavily through the introductions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, who have since contributed to 26 Premier League goals between them.

For the most of the season, United’s new-look £200million attack has been firing on all cylinders, although, in recent years, this hasn’t been the case for the Reds.

Michael Carrick has been able to get the tune out of his side that both Ruben Amorim and Erik Ten Hag struggled to get during their tenures at the club, which has seen the Reds climb to fourth in the table.

As for Ten Hag, the Dutch manager made an attempt to reunite with one of his former Ajax stars, although this £35 million move was blocked by the Red Devils.

United wanted Brobbey under Ten Hag

As reported by Sport Witness, Ten Hag was keen on reuniting with his former Ajax striker, Brian Brobbey, back in 2022, with the Dutch coach wanting to offer around £35 million for the 24-year-old.

This report stated that the young powerhouse ‘wisely decided to stay’ rather than move to Old Trafford, before eventually accepting a move to Sunderland at the end of the 2025 summer transfer window.

Brobbey ‘couldn’t resist the lure of Sunderland’, where he has since managed five goals and one assist in the league, as his side surprisingly sit in the middle of the table.

It was thought at the time that United, as a club, had blocked their manager from signing Brobbey, although in hindsight this probably worked out best for both parties.

United’s forward depth

Although a move for Brobbey never materialised, United have seemingly put their goalscoring woes of old behind them, scoring 47 goals in only 26 league matches.

This tally has already surpassed their total for the 2024/25 campaign, when they scored only 44 in their 38 league fixtures.

The Reds look practically set for a spot in one of UEFA’s European competitions next campaign, which begs the question: Do they have sufficient depth?

As things stand, United have two right-wingers at their disposal, as well as two strikers, and only one traditional left-winger, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Carrick’s side delve into the winger market once the summer arrives.
